Periodically I read rumors of iPhone branching out form AT&T in the US. Yesterday I happened upon one suggesting the iPhone will go to to T-Mobile in Q3 of this year. Now usually these rumors are about a Verizon iPhone, which if you know anything about cell carriers and the US regulatory process you know isn’t gonna happen this year. And how is it I know what so many others don’t?

I pay attention.

In order to sell a device in the US it must first be approved by the FCC. Now the FCC is not the tightest lipped organization out there. Routinely devices are outed by their applications to the FCC being leaked. And if you think that someone at the FCC wouldn’t be selling off a CDMA iPhone application to the highest bidder you’re deluded. Proof of a CDMA iPhone would be worth BIG money. Now surely Apple possess such a device, there are a few large CDMA markets in Asia (China and South Korea among others) and Apple always watches where the money is. Thats why they sell phones now in the first place, they saw a market and they went after it.

So if Apple were preparing a CDMA iPhone launch this year they would need to already have approval from the FCC, since they would be testing the phone in real world environments. Sorry Verizon faithful, not happening this year.

Now for the T-Mobile rumors, I give that a maybe. Since they are a GSM/HSDPA carrier like AT&T it wouldn’t take much. But Q3 seems a little soon to me.
